NY to the World - Madison Square Garden
The first two versions were next to the park on 26th Street & Madison Avenue, which is where the arena derives its name. The third version moved The Garden to 50th Street & 8th Avenue, before finally moving to its current home of 31st Street & 8th Avenue.
MSG was built on the site of the original Penn Station over railroad tracks and designed by Severud Associates. After complaints of obstructed views from the stands in the first three versions of the The Garden, the fourth iteration incorporated a 150-foot high, 404-foot diameter roof that uses 48 tension cables to eliminate the need for interior supports thus allowing clear views from every seat.
MSG is the home of the New York Knicks & Rangers, and has hosted many iconic events in history, including the Knicks winning their first championship in 1970, the “Fight of Century” in 1971 where Frazier defeated Ali in 15-rounds, McEnroe beating Arthur Ashe to become the youngest Masters Cup winner in 1979, the Rangers winning the Stanley Cup in 1994, the Larry Johnson 4-point play in 1999, the 2001 New York City Concert, and many more.
The beacon of our city. From New York to the World.
